In the\u00a0Kansas City Business Journal<\/u>,\u00a0Dr. Naiomi Jamal<\/strong>\u00a0was listed as one of the “20 to Know: These healthcare professionals keep\u00a0\u200bKC hale and hearty.”\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the\u00a0Ingram’s Magazine<\/u>,\u00a0Rachel Melson, DNP,<\/strong>\u00a0was listed as one of the “2022 Heroes in Healthcare.”\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chief quality officer, Swope Health<\/p>\n

Practicing as a primary care physician these days is challenge enough. But that\u2019s just\u00a0the start of Jamal\u2019s job. As chief quality officer, she leads Swope Health\u2019s quality and improvement efforts, as well as the organization\u2019s work in population health that looks<\/p>\n

both at the patient and resource-allocation sides of the equation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jamal received a medical degree in Pakistan, then did residencies in family medicine and general preventive medicine and public health at the University of Texas Medical Branch. She also has a master\u2019s in health from UTMB.<\/p>\n

Rachel Melson, DNP<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Rachel Melson, Swope Health\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Call it the Melson Mission Statement: \u201cIn nursing, you learn to treat others with compassion and as an equal.\u00a0And you approach every interaction with a patient in your care with your whole heart, every time.\u201d So says \u200bnurse practitioner Rachel Melson of Swope Health.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She\u2019s a native of Raytown who flirted with the idea of a law degree\u2014right up to her first day at Rockhurst University. \u201cI started wondering about a career that would\u00a0allow me to help others in a more hands-on way,\u201d she says. \u201cThe day of registration, I surprised my parents with a change to nursing. It was the best decision I have ever made.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She worked for years in the ICU ward at\u00a0Research Medical Center, but when her final clinical rotation for nurse practitioner took her to Swope Health, \u201cI finally saw where Iwas called to be,\u201d she says. \u201cMy critical-thinking skills that I developed from years in the ICU armed me with the tools to help an\u00a0underserved community in ways I didn\u2019t know were possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Medicine, Melson says, can be very algorithmic: You have X disease,\u00a0you get X workup, and then you get X medicine\u00a0\/treatment\/ education. \u201cBut there is not a perfect algorithm for a person who is living in a tent, has several significant medical conditions, no access to clean water, and no way to store their medicine,\u201d she says. \u201cYou have to think outside the box, know your community and its resources, and want to go the extra mile for your patients.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The real appeal of nursing, she says, wasn\u2019t apparent until she was already in nursing school. \u201cBeing a nurse is about truly wanting to care for others without any bias for their circumstance and a desire to help from a position of a peer, rather than the perceived superordinate position of other professions,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A self-described lifelong learner, she pursued the highest degree possible to achieve the most significant impact: \u201cEvery day I am given the opportunity to make meaningful changes to the health of others in the exam room, in the community, and even in the classroom.\u200b”<\/p>\n
