HIV can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/statistics\/overview\/index.html\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>, at the end of 2020, more than 1 million people were diagnosed with HIV.\u00a0 Men account for about 81 percent of new HIV diagnoses and women account for 19 percent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/hiv-and-aids\">Learn more about HIV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13866 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/swopehealth.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/cdc-hiv-africanamericans-most-affected-subpopulations-infographic-1200x630-1-800x420.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>When should I get tested for HIV? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/myhealthfinder\/health-conditions\/hiv-and-other-stds\/get-tested-hiv\">Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion<\/a> says <strong>everyone<\/strong> ages 15 to 65 years needs to get tested for HIV at least once. All pregnant people also need to get tested.<\/p>\n<p>Get tested at least once a year if you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have sex with someone who has HIV<\/li>\n<li>Use drugs with needles (not including drugs prescribed for you)<\/li>\n<li>Have sex in exchange for things, like drugs or money<\/li>\n<li>Have another sexually transmitted disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/hiv-and-aids\/hiv-and-aids-basics\/hiv-testing#2)\">Learn more about HIV testing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13864 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/swopehealth.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/cdc-hiv-everyone-get-tested-infographic-1920x1080-1-800x450.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What action can I take?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can take medicine to lower your risk of HIV. If you\u2019re at higher risk for HIV \u2014 like if you\u2019re in a relationship with someone who has HIV \u2014 you can take a medicine called PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) every day to lower your risk of getting HIV. This is recommended for everyone with HIV, and people with HIV should start ART as soon as possible after diagnosis, even on that same day.
