{"id":14324,"date":"2023-08-09T19:20:45","date_gmt":"2023-08-10T00:20:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swopehealth.org\/?p=14324"},"modified":"2023-08-09T19:20:45","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T00:20:45","slug":"one-on-one-with-swope-health-marquita-taylor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swopehealth.org\/one-on-one-with-swope-health-marquita-taylor\/","title":{"rendered":"One on One with Swope Health: Marquita Taylor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swope Health announces a new edition of its podcast, One on One with Swope Health, featuring Marquita Taylor, president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cfn.umkc.edu\/santa-fe-area-council\/\">Santa Fe Area Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Wesson, founder and publisher of The Next Page KC, a newspaper focused on the Black community, hosts the show\u2019s conversations with Kansas Citians about issues of importance to the community\u2019s health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>In this conversation, Eric and Marquita discuss the Santa Fe neighborhood, which is roughly bounded by 27<sup>th<\/sup> Street on the north, Linwood Boulevard on the south, Prospect Avenue on the west and Indiana Avenue on the east. The neighborhood covers approximately 160 acres and is listed on the Department of the Interior\u2019s National Register of Historic Places.<\/p>\n<p>The neighborhood, as Marquita relates, is the site of the homes of Buck O\u2019Neil, the Rev. Wallace Hartsfield, and Satchel Paige.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"One on One 080823 Segment 17 Marquita Taylor guest\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/chhIFUC84q4\" width=\"648\" height=\"365\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The neighborhood today is focused on rebuilding and renovating its historic mansions, led by the Santa Fe Area Council. Meetings regularly draw 50 people or more, she said, always looking for what\u2019s next for the neighborhood. Although the neighborhood had its share of the rising crime \u2013 10 murders in 2022 \u2013 Marquita cites progress in 2023: funds from the city and Community Capital Fund for home repairs and renovations, tax abatements, city-supported cleanups, and a new community art exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeighbors are the reason we\u2019ve been so successful,\u201d Marquita said.<\/p>\n<p>Marquita also noted the plans for the Satchel Paige home, 2626 E. 28<sup>th<\/sup> St., to be converted into a museum, with event space and kitchen, community space, and small business offices. The restoration and redevelopment of the family home is the subject of a $7 million campaign, just getting underway.<\/p>\n<p>Marquita said the museum can help everyone treasure and understand the importance of Satchel Paige, who she called &#8220;the best pitcher of all times.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The neighborhood is also a focal point for the <a href=\"https:\/\/kccommongood.org\/programs\/kc-360\/\">KC 360 initiative<\/a>, a crime reduction and community revitalization program of KC Common Good.
