{"id":37419,"date":"2024-12-23T11:50:18","date_gmt":"2024-12-23T17:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swopehealth.org\/?p=37419"},"modified":"2024-12-23T11:56:52","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T17:56:52","slug":"podcast-with-emmet-pierson-jr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swopehealth.org\/podcast-with-emmet-pierson-jr\/","title":{"rendered":"One-on-one with Swope Health: Emmet Pierson Jr. \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Swope Health announces a new edition of its podcast, One on One with Swope Health, featuring Emmet Pierson Jr., president and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cb-kc.org\/\">Community Builders KC<\/a>, a non-profit urban core development organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eric Wesson, founder and publisher of The Next Page KC, a newspaper focused on the Black community, hosts the show\u2019s conversations with Kansas Citians about issues of importance to the community\u2019s health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this conversation, Pierson discusses CBKC\u2019s approach to investing and development as a means of building equity, access, opportunity and advocacy for Kansas City\u2019s urban core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pierson, a native of Kansas City, grew up in the Blue Hills neighborhood and found his career in development \u201cby accident.\u201d He started working with his brother-in-law in finance and real estate, and learned more about community development from several mentors, including Rochester \u201cChuck\u201d Gaston, one of the founders of Community Builders, and Don Maxwell, a former president of the Community Development Corp. of Kansas City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Economic development, in Pierson\u2019s definition, encompasses residential housing, workforce development, and opportunity development \u2013 anything necessary to bring economic life and vitality to a community, often one marginalized and under resourced. It also includes being a good steward of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s missing is often the sustained investment, he said. There has been sustained investment in downtown, Power &amp; Light District, River Market, and the Crossroads, but not the city\u2019s East Side, he argues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\" style=\"margin-right:0;margin-left:0\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"Segment 30 Emmet Pierson Jr Guest\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6ZGLrg7MmfI?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/swopehealth.org\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>CBKC has largely led the development along the Brush Creek corridor, or the 47<sup>th<\/sup> Street\/Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and Pierson notes this area has not received the kind of catalyst funding that has been invested elsewhere in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One exception is 18<sup>th<\/sup> and Vine, the three block area, that is seeing continued progress with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and campus and Parade Park developments, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation also addressed the city-owned Linwood Shopping Center at 31<sup>st<\/sup> and Prospect, an area that has been a focus for crime, drug-dealing, panhandling, and prostitution. The city and police department committed to additional attention to the area, including a $750,000 investment in the grocery operated by CBKC.
