Arsenial Runion spent three years at Swope Health soaking in
as much knowledge as he could. Now, Runion is the Chief Executive Officer at East
Liberty Family Health Care Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and says he couldn\u2019t have done it without applying
all that he learned at Swope Health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Introduction to healthcare
<\/b>Runion had revenue cycle and other experience in the public sector where he crossed paths with Swope Health President and CEO Jeron Ravin, J.D. In 2020, Runion left a position where he was traveling six days a week to become Swope Health\u2019s Director of Patient Experience. While<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

serving in the role, he worked closely with Swope Health\nPresident and CEO Jeron Ravin, J.D. <\/o:p><\/p>

\u201cJeron was around a year in at Swope Health at the time, and\nthere was an opportunity to join the health center under his leadership,\u201d\nRunion said. \u201cJeron had big visions to change the dynamics of the landscape of\nhealthcare, which is reflective of the work Swope Health has done during his\ntenure. He was intentional about improving the overall patient experience within\nthe organization, and that was a good fit for me.\u201d<\/o:p><\/p>

This was the start of something new for Runion, who became\nquickly acclimated to life at an FQHC. In his role, he had many\nresponsibilities, such as overseeing grants and managing front-line operations,\nalong with managing the Clinic Support Representatives, Federal Navigators, and\nthe Outreach and Enrollment team. Due to his contributions, Swope Health gained\nadditional exposure that helped pull in more patients. <\/o:p><\/p>

\u201cI was able to do some interesting things through some marketing\ncampaigns I ran, in collaboration with Jeron and Swope Health\u2019s marketing team,\u201d\nRunion said. \u201cWe placed various types of advertising in the KCI airport, on billboards\nthroughout the city, on radio, and we were featured in The New York Times<\/i>\nfor our efforts in enrolling clients in Medicaid.\u201d<\/o:p><\/p>

Making moves at Swope Health<\/o:p><\/b><\/p>

Runion is passionate about ensuring that the underserved\nreceive the health care that they deserve, which made Swope Health an ideal\nstarting ground for his career. During his tenure, his eyes were opened to seeing\nthe bigger picture. He used every day as a learning experience.<\/o:p><\/p>

\u201cI was able to successfully enhance programs here and help\nwith the development and growth of this organization overall. My mentorship by\nJeron and experience in various areas helped me understand that if you serve\nwell where you’ve been assigned, doors will always open for you,\u201d he said. <\/o:p><\/p>

Impacting new territory <\/o:p><\/b><\/p>

Over time, an opportunity at another FQHC became available. In\n2023, Runion took his talents to East Liberty Family Health Care Center (ELFHCC),\na faith-based community health center founded in 1982, where he currently\nserves as CEO. ELFHCC offers similar services to Swope Health, and under\nRunion\u2019s leadership, continues to grow. Currently, the FQHC has four locations,\none of which was added in the first year of Runion\u2019s new administration. <\/o:p><\/p>

\u201cI was brought in to help turn the organization around. They\nneeded a change financially, ethically, morally, and within the community,\u201d\nRunion said. \u201cWe forged some great partnerships with Duquesne University and\nother universities. We also opened a new site last October.\u201d<\/o:p><\/p>

ELFHCC is a member of the Pennsylvania Association of\nCommunity Health Centers, which is the largest primary care network in\nPennsylvania and the nation. Coming from the largest FQHC in the Kansas City region,\nRunion continues to impact large quantities of patients. While he is\nconsistently learning how to improve his FQHC, he still credits Swope Health\nfor his knowledge in the field.  <\/o:p><\/p>

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>

\u201cExposure to operations and other experiences at Swope\nHealth helped prepare me for the President and CEO position at East Liberty. Swope\nHealth is the master training ground; it is a different beast, especially when\ncompared to other health centers across the country. It\u2019s super progressive,\u201d\nhe said. \u201cThe complexities of this FQHC are unmatched by any others in the\ncountry. If you can work and build leadership skills at Swope Health, you’ll be\nsuccessful anywhere you go.\u201d <\/o:p><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
