Throughout his life, Kelvin Simmons has had ties to Swope Health in just about every way imaginable. From growing up down the road from Swope Health Central, to being a patient, to being employed by the organization, the co-founder and principal of the Nexus Group has spent both his youth and professional career affiliated with the health center.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

The early days<\/b><\/p>

Simmons\u2019 childhood home was on 41st<\/sup> and Montgall Avenue. He graduated from Paseo High School, which is located approximately two miles from where Swope Health Central is located today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cI have memories\nbefore Swope Health even got there,\u201d Kelvin Simmons said. \u201cThere’s an old\npicture of Swope Community Builders that used to be the Spartans Retail Center,\nand I knew of that place when I was growing up. The elders in the community who\nremember that are starting to die off and there aren\u2019t many people who can give\nyou a physical description of what it used to be before it was the Swope Health\ncampus, but I can.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>

Simmons kicked off his\npolitical career as a city councilman in 1997 and eventually relocated to\nJefferson City. There, he was a Missouri Public Service Chairman and\nCommissioner before serving as the Director of Economic Development for the\nState of Missouri. Simmons eventually found his way back to Kansas City after\naccepting the role of Vice President of Development and Governmental Affairs at\nSwope Health. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u201cI\ncame aboard in 2005 on the health side, and I did several things, from serving\nin governmental affairs, to being a part of development, to acting as the\ndirect point of contact for media inquiries,\u201d he said. \u201cUltimately, I rolled\ninto Swope Community Builders, becoming the President and CEO.\u201d <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

Transition\nfrom healthcare to development<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>

Swope\nCommunity Builders \u2013 an urban core development company now known as Community\nBuilders of Kansas City \u2013 was established in 1991 as a member of Swope\nCommunity Enterprises, another umbrella organization of Swope Health. After one\nyear at Swope Health, Simons transitioned into the head leadership role at\nSwope Community Builders. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u201cGoing\nto the Swope Community Builder side was really about community development\u201d\nSimmons said. \u201cThat was a part of Swope Health\u2019s overall mission, which was\ngrowing and ensuring that there was development in the area.\u201d<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

From\n2006 to 2008, Simmons made strides for Swope Community Builders. He considers\nhis biggest accomplishment to be putting Swope Health on the map after opening The\nShops on Blue Parkway, a major development includes a grocery store and retail\noperations. His passion for the community was shown by the work he did.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u201cI\nfelt that I’m somewhat of a unicorn. being able to make that transition from\nthe healthcare organization over to the Community Builders\u2019 side, but it’s a\ncontinuation of who I am as a person,\u201d he said. \u201cBeing someone from the\ncommunity who utilized the services, it felt right at home to be a part of the\nhigh-level management of the organization.\u201d <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

His\ncareer after Swope Health<\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/p>

Eventually,\nSimmons pursued another opportunity in 2009 when he was appointed by Governor\nJay Nixon as one of his first cabinet members. He was also the State of\nMissouri Commissioner of Administration. In 2012, Simmons\u2019 talents led him to\nbecome a Principal at Dentons \u2013 the largest international law firm in the world\n\u2013 which eventually led him to the Nexus Group, where he\u2019s remained at since\n2018.  <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\u201cConflicts\ncan be developed at an international law firm, and conflicts can stifle one’s\ngrowth. At the time, we thought we needed to open our own firm, and our entire\npublic policy group in Missouri formed the Nexus Group,\u201d he said. \u201cIt minimized\nour conflicts and increased our ability to have greater revenues.\u201d<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>

Simmons\u2019\ntime at Swope Health has influenced the last 17 years of his career, and he\nstill has ties to the organization that means so much to him. Through the Nexus\nGroup, Simmons works closely with Swope Health. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>

\u201cThe\nopportunity at Swope Community Builders allowed me to branch out and do private\ndevelopment, and I’m still doing that today. I group with Swope Health in\nJefferson City and in Kansas City, so it’s been a full circle moment. For all\npractical purposes, I’m still working for Swope Health today,\u201d Simmons said. <\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
