She\u2019s the founder and CEO of The Transition Academy and North Star Solutions, which are designed to help disabled students and their<br \/>families. Riley has an impressive resume with stops all around Kansas City, and it all started at Swope Health in the late 90s.<\/p><p style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><b>Her time at Swope Health <\/b><\/p><p style=\"line-height: 115%;\">Initially, Riley was a<br \/>reporter after earning a bachelor&#8217;s degree in journalism at the University of<br \/>Missouri.\u00a0<span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit; background-color: initial;\">However, she decided her passion was working for change, not reporting on community issues. She accepted her first full-time job in the planning and development department at Swope Health, which led grant writing and fundraising work. Her role at Swope Health encompassed public relations and media relations.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 115%;\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-140c260 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"140c260\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-fe7b036\" data-id=\"fe7b036\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d258d90 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d258d90\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">\u201cAt the end of my\ninternship at United Way, I saw an ad for the public relations job at Swope\nHealth,\u201d Riley said. \u201cI hadn\u2019t heard of public relations, but it sounded fun\nand was up my alley. I got the job, and it changed my life.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">E. Frank Ellis, Swope\nHealth founder and CEO at the time, wanted to spread the word about the health\ncenter, and Riley ran with it. She used her gift for storytelling to connect\nwith media outlets and got plenty of local television coverage \u2013 including landing\nmedia coverage for the first-ever Treat Town, an annual trick-or-treating\nexperience that still takes place at Swope Health Central every October. &nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">\u201cWe wanted to bring in\npeople who weren&#8217;t patients to connect them to our mission. The plan was to\nmake them feel like they were a part of the health center,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was\nall this fun stuff that I didn\u2019t realize was a job. Swope Health let me spread\nmy wings, fly, and have a blast.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\"><b>Her next chapter <o:p><\/o:p><\/b><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">After two eventful\nyears at Swope Health, she took her talents elsewhere. From 1998-2004, Riley\nhad similar roles at five different organizations: Blue Cross and Blue Shield\nof Kansas City, Microsoft, Full Employment Council, Mazuma Credit Union, and\nCommunity Movement for Urban Progress. Eventually, she took time away to care\nfor her family.&nbsp; <o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">\u201cWhen my son was\ndiagnosed with autism, I stopped working full time for a while so I could focus\non him and his therapeutic needs,\u201d Riley said. <o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">Riley worked part-time\nfor Girl Scouts while taking care of her son. Once he reached kindergarten, she\nbegan an 11-year tenure at Metropolitan Community College.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">\u201cI spent the first\nthree years at the Longview campus,\u201d she said. \u201cThen I went to Penn Valley,\nwhere I focused on community engagement, marketing, and connecting to the\ncommunity that it served.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\"><b>Path to entrepreneurship<o:p><\/o:p><\/b><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">Riley eventually moved\non and worked at WellCare Health Plans before becoming an admissions recruiter\nfor Kansas City Public Schools. Once her son reached high school, she noticed\nthere was an educational gap for students who need more help with their transition\ninto the workforce. <o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">\u201cThere were always\nbridge programs for special populations \u2013 such as Blacks in Engineering, women\nin STEM, and Latinos in Medicine \u2013 but we never did any overt outreach to\nstudents with disabilities. As my son got older, I wanted to make a difference,\nand my path led me to create the solution: The Transition Academy,\u201d Riley said.\n<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">While at KCPS, Riley\nmade strong connections with the school district as well as with district\npartners like SchoolSmartKC. The non-profit organization supports Kansas City\nschools with strategies and resources, and she joined their staff in 2019. <o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">\u201cI became a consultant\nto help them with their work in special education. While I worked with them in\nthat capacity, I was also able to launch The Transition Academy.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">Two years later, Riley\nfounded North Star, a web-based college and career navigation tool for high\nschool students with disabilities. The tech platform is in development.<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">\u201cI always envisioned\nsome type of interactive tech product that would guide families through the\ndifferent navigations of disabilities,\u201d she said. \u201cThe goal of North Star is to\nsupport The Transition Academy youth, families, and teachers so they can navigate\nthe landscape and be connected to the resources that they need.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">The Transition Academy\nis thriving, growing, and positively impacting so many disabled individuals and\ntheir families. Riley credits the success of her companies with what she\nlearned and experienced at Swope Health. <o:p><\/o:p><\/p><p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p><p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height:115%\">\u201cMy entrepreneurship\npath aligned with what I learned when working at Swope Health. It laid the\nfoundation for what can be done. It showed me what happens when you believe in\nthe people you serve,\u201d Riley said. \u201cWhen you believe in them, you do whatever you\ncan to make sure they&#8217;re successful.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kim Riley is a visionary innovator who has a passion for helping people \u2013 especially thosewith disabilities.
