{"id":39254,"date":"2025-07-09T15:10:52","date_gmt":"2025-07-09T20:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swopehealth.org\/?p=39254"},"modified":"2025-07-09T15:13:23","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T20:13:23","slug":"one-on-one-with-swope-health-janet-miles-bartee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swopehealth.org\/one-on-one-with-swope-health-janet-miles-bartee\/","title":{"rendered":"One-on-one with Swope Health: Janet Miles Bartee"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Swope Health announces a new edition of its podcast, One on One with Swope Health, featuring a conversation with Janet Miles Bartee, president and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/kclinc.org\/\">LINC (Local Investment Commission)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eric Wesson, founder and publisher of The Next Page KC, a newspaper focused on the Black community, hosts the show\u2019s conversations with Kansas Citians about issues of importance to the community\u2019s health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Bartee explains the role of LINC in the community \u2013 a non-profit organization that works with state and local government, businesses, community and civic leaders to improve the lives of children and families in the Kansas City region. She describes her career journey with LINC, starting as a part-time afterschool teacher, then a site coordinator, supervisor, manager, and vice president before taking the top positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LINC, she said, is best described as a hub of caring, providing for the needs of the people in the community. The organization provides caring communities for students, emergency food distribution, early childhood support, employment and job training, financial counseling, elder care, home repairs, neighborhood development, community organizing and much more. LINC serves more than 7,000 children a day in free programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LINC is most known for its before- and after-school programs, serving seven school districts and 54 schools. \u201cWe serve the whole child, whatever it takes for a child to be successful in school \u2013 clothes, food, utility assistance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"Segment 36 Janet Miles Bartee guest\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9SHZGyeTw5c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLINC is whatever the community needs,\u201d she said. LINC provided COVID-19 vaccinations and emergency food during the pandemic, while also making home visits, providing computers and internet hotspots to help students with the sudden shift to online learning. &nbsp;\u201cWe pride ourselves on being there for whatever the community needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pandemic, she said, helped LINC focus on its core mission: serving community, with whatever the need is. The agency distributed $4.5 million in rental and utility assistance during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LINC acts with compassion, she said. \u201cFor me, it is helping people become successful and remain successful,\u201d she said. \u201cNo matter what we do, there has to be a component on building stability.\u201d Relationships with families are key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pending budget cuts from federal and state programs, however, might limit LINC\u2019s ability to expand and serve more of the community. For the first time, LINC has hired a developer to build support with foundations, the city, the county, and individual donors to fill the gaps from federal budget cuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s missing? \u201cWe need to invest in people. We don\u2019t do enough to invest enough in people. We\u2019re not just giving handouts, we are investing in people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo many of our children are suffering,\u201d she said, noting that many children with unstable housing move from school to school. LINC staffers, in distinctive blue shirts are one constant presence in their lives. School programs also address gun violence, conflict resolution, building relationships and character, caring for each other. \u201cWe teach them how to be their brother\u2019s keeper, to understand we are responsible for each other,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another bright spot in the LINC portfolio is the Palestine Senior Center, 3325 Prospect Ave., where membership has grown from 65 during COVID days to more than 400 now. The activity center provides meals, classes, fitness programs, healthcare and additional resources.
